Store Opening/Store Closing 2.0

Postby italiana71 » 19 Apr 2010, 15:03

What's going in on 86th and third? (the old King's place.) They've already started reconstruction

toy store on 83rd and 3rd gone.

New 99 cents store opening on the corner of 4th and 88th two doors down from uncle Jimmy's.

We tried the new yogurt place on 3rd around 74th street (not sure of the exact location). The chocolate was yummy. The cookie dough topping was pretty bad. The "original" flavor is apparently plain, unflavored yogurt and pretty sour/nasty tasting. It's also not cheap, one small cup, one medium cup with 1 topping, came out around $7.50. Ouch.

That strip has been pretty desolate -- Haagen-Dazs (still) closed for better part of a year; tutoring place closed for ages, until Uncle Jimmy's moved in ... then King's, then the passport place.
Having a 99-cent store replace the passport place didn't exactly look like progress. I just hope that the ex-King's doesn't become a mega-99-cents emporium.

Tnx for correction.
In which case, that tutoring place has been empty for a near-eon.

Last week a construction dude told me that it would become another clothing store, though he didn't know what the name of it might be. His words were quite ambiguous so it could be another store similar to King's, or a more name-ish brand store...

We need a 99 cent store about as much as we need another nail salon. One just went up ACROSS the street from another one (Where Cue used to be, 3rd Ave and 87th). I will never have the need for a nail salon, and there are things that I cannot get in this neighborhood. Crazy.

I went in a few weeks ago. The music was loud, the person behind the counter seemed annoyed that I wanted a small plain with no toppings. The serving was "hollow" so it looked bigger than it was. And the taste was mediocre compared to the other fro- yo that is served around. This one doesn't make the grade IMHO

Saw the new sign up today where shenanigans (uncle buck's; samm's) used to be -- the new place will be called Huckleberry's N.Y. I assume it's going to be another bar/restaurant, but don't know cause the windows are still covered in newspaper.

The Hen House had the paper off the windows. It looked like training was going on -- there was food and what looked like staff but the place wasn't open yet.

Dept of Buildings site says architect submitted a plan to do "interior renovation of existing restaurant with new cooking equipment," etc. Problem is that DOB disapproved the plan today (4/21).

Hellas Market on the corner of 87th and 4th closed last week due to lack of business.
That place had been open a very long time.

If this is an outpost of the Santa Monica Huckleberry's, we are in luck.

no lonestar is run by a tonestar LOL, couldn't resist!

never heard of Huckleberry whatever -- i think that place might have a hard time getting a liquor license, but as beerman would say "what do I know"

p.s. renovation is being done to the old "Fannings Pub", i heard through the grapevine (i.e. the person taking over), can't wait to see the turnout!!! GOOD LUCK!

um, back to the topic of businesses OPENING or CLOSING...

carfreeinla wrote:If this is an outpost of the Santa Monica Huckleberry's, we are in luck.

don't know what that is, but interesting because when I first saw the sign last week I wondered if it was connected to a chain since they put "N.Y." in the name. On the other hand, it could be that they added the "N.Y." in order to separate themselves from any other business with the Huckleberry name.

Huckleberry's in Santa Monica makes incredible breakfasts and salads. They are one of the places that uses the Jidori chickens that the NY Times just wrote about.
They are owned by the couple who own Rustic Canyon- my favorite LA burger right now... Somehow, I don't see this as the first place on the East Coast that they would pick to open - that is just a reflection on the amount of traffic in this neighborhood. I see them as being a higher volume place. But if they did indeed open here, I would be a regular...

I'm guessing it's not affiliated then, cause that sounds more like a cafe, and the former Shenanigans/Uncle Buck's/Samms space is pretty large with that back room. So I'm assuming it will be another bar-restaurant. The question is what type of food/atmosphere it will be.

The Hen House has the paper off their windows. It looks pretty nice inside, a bit classier than when it was Los Pollitos. There's a sign saying they'll open soon. But I'll take that with a grain of salt, Chock Full O' Nuts around 74th street has been opening soon for two years now....

um they've been open for at least two months now. But I don't think it's a regular bakery; appears to be just for special orders (cakes for parties, weddings, etc) so I'm not sure if they keep regular store hours or only there when there are appts set (that's why it appears closed most times when walking by).

I think you got misinformed, was there a cloud of pot smoke around that person??
Maybe a kiddie water park, that's all that would be remotely possible there, not a huge space
