Egyptian Election Results

Watched the exciting Egyptian election results today on TV. It is too early to say what is next in the Egyptian revolution, whether or not SCAF will allow a transfer of power, whether or not the revolutionary forces there that toppled the dictatorship will pressure the new gov't, etc. But it is exciting.

Check out this music video. Amazing:

I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government. (Martin Luther King, Jr.)

I think at this point anything is possible. Been reading lots of eyewitness accounts of folks involved in organizing in Egypt. No one knows what will happen next.

The country is being run by a junta, a junta that has close ties from the US military, not exactly what I would call a free democracy. sure that can change but these are the same generals that supported and perpetuated a state of emergency for what was it? 30 years? and used as an excuse to not be free and democratic?

I hate to shit over an election such as it is but lets be honest, the country does not have a history of democratic institutions and it when you have a group of generals deciding how the shots are being called you've got to wonder how "Free" it really is... If they do become something better that is great for the avg Ahmed on street and it will be good for them in the long run but as it is now they don't have freedom and they sure as fuck are not out from under the thumbs of the generals who are I suspect taking their orders from the pentagon.

that's just my take on it...

I agree with you. And the truth is it may turn out that the new "democratic" gov't has no power whatsoever and the country continues to be run by the military.

But it is also true that there was a mass movement on the streets and in the workplaces that toppled Mubarak. They have the potential to continue to demand more democratic reforms. Are they strong enough to overthrow the military? Maybe not. ARe they strong enough to win meaningful reforms? I would think yes.

But again, this chapter in Egyptian history is not closed. Not yet.

not at all, but until they step down and give complete control of everything, including the army itself, to the civilian gov these current events are just a horse and pony show for the cameras. An election of candidates who were vetted and approved by the military isn't much better than North Korea having it's elections.
