I passed that the other day and was wondering that too!

The accessories store (Xinnel, I think?) that was at 71st and 3rd Ave is now a WE BUY GOLD! place complete with flashing LED sign and all. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

But there is a whole site dedicated to the construction of a velodrome in the field at 97th street. http://www.brooklynvelodrome.com/

Agreed, pretty shady guy. The place falls short and could be improved with minimal effort. Spend a few hundred and finish the horrible plywood bathrooms. Take a lesson from Gordon Ramsey and examine how you plate your entrees and stop selling white rice as risotto.

Avalon Travel near 95th on Third is closed for good as of Feb 29. That makes two empty spaces right next to each other on that block -- Avalon Travel space and the corner space next door that used to be a photo shop. Counting the empty former greengrocer space across the street on the corner of 94th, that's 3 empty spaces on that block. And the empty nearby former Bally Union makes 4. Here's hoping for something useful!

I know. Everytime I walked by Avalon, I wondered who still uses a travel agent. They were there for 23 years. And, actually, the sign on their window says they are moving to NY. Not sure where in NY. I'm hoping that something more useful than a travel agent shows up in that space.

Maybe SI might be better.
(Whatever happened to Tweety anyway?)
Even so, the travel agents that still thrive usually get most of their revenue from corporate accounts.

Didn't get a chance to say so before. I think the timing on this is faulty since Athens market right across the street has a full butcher dept run by a guy who worked at Vinnie & Eddie's (?) across from Pegasus.

Heard a rumor that the bagel shop on Third between 94th & 95th might be expanding. There are two empty spaces next door to it now that Avalon Travel is gone. And the corner space that used to be a photo store has been empty for a long time now. A year maybe?

I think so. The longtime owner died two years ago but the place stayed open for awhile. Then the store closed, but for a short time the owners did some business out of the travel agency. Then pffft.

Lots of construction/renovation work going on in the long empty ex-photo store on Third @ 95th today. Work started there as soon as the Avalon Travel space became available last week.

very shady indeed. i'm getting more and more to dislike him, from my experience and from what i hear. whenever we go, we eat and have our bucket of beer and leave a nice tip. the last time my bf and i went, it was dead (sunday afternoon - no sports) so i had the munchies so grabbed a quick bag of chips. i understand that it's not proper etiquette to eat where they serve food, but i didn't feel like i was impeding on anybody's space nor was i in the mood for a big meal as we had eaten at o'sully's. so of course he made a snide yet passive aggressive comment about that. ok, so we put the small bag of chips away. also, (again we weren't impeding on other customers) we were reading the sunday paper. so of course he saw that and immediately turned down the lights. i mean, come on, we were the only paying customers there along with our friend and this is how we were treated as loyal customers? he's a cheap ass, that's what he is. i know ppl may have different points of view on what i'm saying but i know proper etiquette and really didn't think it was a big deal. especially to put a really bad taste in my mouth that we simply got up and left while we intended on ordering another bucket.

one plus, the sunday bartender tom was sweet as pie and as a plus looks exactly like michael mcDonald, lol. we're going to bring him a cd we have, but won't be eating chips and reading the sunday paper ;)

Color me confused.

"i understand that it's not proper etiquette to eat where they serve food'.
vs
"what i'm saying but i know proper etiquette and really didn't think it was a big deal".

Go.

if you're confused, then there's no explaining. read thoroughly and understand why i didn't think it was a big deal due to the circumstances. if you disagree, than that's your right. and the "go" stuff is so overused...

EVERYONE knows you never bring food into an establishment that serves food. end of story, unless your on a close personal relationship with the owner(s) and they allow it.

on a side note: we (BOUNCER) caught some girls at L* with a six pack of beer in one of their purses (ON ICE!!!!?????) this weekend!!!! hows that for proper etiquette?

I saw this happen years ago at Doc Holliday's in the city, a group had a six pack in a bag they had bought at a bodega next door. They were shocked - *shocked* - when the bartender kicked them out.

If you felt it was really OK you probably would have said something like "I brought in a small bag of chips and he yelled at me!". As it was you gave a guilty-sounding rambling set of excuses explaining why it was warranted given the exact set of circumstances which admittedly was a judgement call which (yada yada yada...).

NR, i felt no guilt at all. actually, he wasn't there when i got there, nobody was there when i brought in the chips, so i thought i'd inhale them and that would be that. again, i don't care what you think. my prob is that the owner's an ass. simple as that. also, he didn't yell...he is a pompous ass that is passive aggressive. also, i do agree that there may be two trains of thought of my actions and that's fine.

i guess there was a prob with me reading at an absolutely empty bar as well.
