I noticed the recent sign change too, but it was no surprise since the story of Huckleberry's closing was that the landlord wanted to sell the whole building and didn't want a tenant with back rent owed (which would make it harder to sell). So the landlord told huckleberry's they wouldn't owe money/clean slate if they were to close down (2 outta 3 owners were willing to do that, and robbed/ransacked the place in order to force the 1 holdout to shut down).

I wonder if the holdout was our friend that was posting on here...

T&R Endurance Sports on the corner of 79th and 3rd has a "store for rent" sign posted.

Too bad. A well kept store.

I was a member of the old BRT Board years and years ago . . . and have been a lurker on this on thread for at least a year. This is my first post on the new message board:

I tried to go to the Bean Post Pub last night and was surprised to see that the DOH put up their "Closed by Order of . . ." signs. An additional sign in marker was added saying that their license expired.

Also, has anyone heard anything from Casa Calamari? Their fire was what . . . 3-4 months ago?

Their sign still says "Temporarily Closed", but it's been too long. They should've been able to repair the fire damage by now and re-open, unless the issue has been delay in getting insurance money needed to make repairs. But I have a feeling they won't be re-opening.

I heard about that. Everyone who goes to that Dolphin is now going to the one at 87th & 4th, so that one has been insanely crowded lately.

I asked myself the same thing.
On one hand: What's lower than a 99 cents store? Maybe the replacement will be a used-Kleenex store or a coffee shop called "Grade Pending"?
On the other hand, it was a really feeble attempt at 99-cents glory. The D-II place down the block was competition simply because D-II carries actual merchandise.

D-II is good for nothing, basically their stuff is disposable clothes. I bought slippers from them, got them home, put them on my feet and ouch, they must have been defective or rejects cause they actually hurt my feet, and when i examined them they were defective and missing cushion on the bottom where your feet are supposed to get comfort, threw them right in the garbage, thank goodness i only wasteD $3.99 on them, i'll take Century's $9.99 pair any day. and one more thing nothing from that store is made in America. Even the socks, brand names are made in Pakistan, India, etc. and are actual "rejects" or "defective". YOu get what you pay for as far as clothes. NOT A FAN!

There's a 99 cent store next to A&S Pork on 5th ave, decent one, but a better one is one street over, next to Burger King, nicer selection of 99 cent stuff

The lesson of the day here is "examine what you buy before you buy it". I don't go to D-II often but when I do I always get a bargain and I've yet to see anything blatantly defective. It's especially good for holiday stuff I find, but also for other "basics".

i think that store is great. the items are inexpensive for a reason. especially when i buy a woman's x-tra large and it could barely fit my young niece ;) a lot of the Ts i bought during the summer are being used as rags now as they shrunk. but for sometimes @ 1.99 a pop, lol, i got my due wear out of them. they also have a great deal on their celestial seasonings teas and other random snacks.

Yup. Holiday and seasonal stuff, snacks and tea, basic housewares and cleaning supplies, paper/plastic goods ... I also bought perfectly OK socks, Ts and heavyweight sweaters there. Nothing lasts forever, and-but I've gotten decent value from D-II.

They are also fabulous if you're into making your own Halloween costumes. You can get stuff incredibly cheap there which approximates what's you're looking for, and then alter it to your hearts content to get where you need to go. Much easier than buying fabric at a fabric store and then creating something from scratch, and much cheaper than buying a costume, and also much more custom.

It's also just a few blocks (in either direction on Third) from two Rite Aids.
Maybe drugstores the new 99-cents stores/banks.

Yeah, Walgreens acquired Duane Reade about 2 years ago. I remember hearing rumors a few years back that the Rite Aid on the corner of 93rd & Third might close and that a Duane Reade might move in there. But after Walgreens opened in the old Key Food spot on Third @ 95th St and after Walgreens bought the Duane Reade chain, those rumors stopped. Even for the big 3 chain drugstores and their constant race to be the biggest of the 3, that would have been too close for Walgreens to have two stores. Rite Aid is still there. I hate to ask but would the Food City space have been big enough for a Trader Joe's? It would be a dream come true if the 92nd St Rite Aid space became a Trader Joe's.

Actually I think it's because they have more grocery options than we do. For example, I know there's a Stop & Shop that's really popular/good prices. How come we don't have one of those too?
