I'm hearing stories in the neighborhood that there's a house on 93rd between 3rd and 4th Ave (about 3 blocks from me) that's become quite the problem in the neighborhood. Everyone's talking about the fighting and drug deals going down in the driveway of this house. I know which house it is because I walk by it on my way to the subway, but I don't see anything going on at that time of day...so is it truth or rumors? And if it is true, then how come the cops haven't done anything yet?

oh it is definitely not just a rumor, it is totally true. I've heard loud fighting for almost a year now but did not realize until recently that it's a crack house...I thought the people living there might be taking drugs, but only in the past month or so learned that they're selling drugs. I think the homeowner passed away and his son got the house, which has become a drug den...and yes many of the drug sales happen out in the driveway.
As for why the cops haven't done anything - I have no idea, but as someone who lives in this neighborhood I have never seen the cops show up. Anybody have any thoughts on how to get the cops to crackdown (no pun intended) on this place?

    Guys,

You have to call Brooklyn South Vice in addition to the Precinct.

The Precinct will not do anything without getting some pressure from the BS task force, or 1PP.

If there are any loud disturbances, fights or noise complaints call 911 and 311 for the noise stuff ASAP - the cops will respond.

But if youre not 911 or 311 anything nothign is showing up on their grid.

Why people dont use 911 and 311 is beyond me, instead they hem and haw about somethign until someone actually does get killed.

If theres a fight, even between 2 people 911, tell them it's getting out of contorl and their might be a weapon.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I have called the cops in the past in regards to this house. I've called the precinct in the past because 911 is supposed to be for emergencies only, and I didn't consider a loud-mouth yelling and screaming at 3am to be an "emergency", just a major annoyance (at the time I didn't know that there was a drug situation going on with this house, I thought he was just some drunk. lol). They never showed up, which kind of surprised me cause I remember a couple of yrs ago when there were problems with the bar next to the prince hotel, the cops would show up when the precinct was called.
Since finding out about the drug situation going on in this house, I did call 311 once (about a month ago), in which they then brought a 911 operator on the line since there was a fight in progress...but as far as I know, no one showed up (it was 2am and I went back to bed after I called the cops, but I didn't hear any sirens or see any lights)...I guess I should've lied and said someone had a weapon. lol I hadn't thought to call the brooklyn south vice (what's the phone number?), but perhaps that would be the best way to go. Has anyone else in the neighborhood called the cops in regards to this house? Perhaps if more people called, something would be done.
  3.  permalink
when you call 311 they give you a reference number. You should then be able to call back and find out the resolution of your complaint -- I suspect since they did transfer you to 911 that you went out of their system. Couldn't find any listing specific to Bklyn South Vice but you can try NYPD Switchboard: 646-610-5000 and see if they give you any info.

You have to lie sometimes, that's really what it comes down to.

If you hear two people yelling, you can assume it's a fight, say there are unknown participants, screaming etc... and that it's escalating.

Follow it up by calling 311, the noise complaint will immediately register at the precinct, just as the 911 call does.

I understand why people are reticent when it comes to using 911, but the bottom line is, if you know there’s a serious public safety problem, better to embellish a shouting match to get the cops to respond than to wiat until someone actually gets seriously hurt.

    It's your tax dollars people.

Call Brooklyn South Vice as well, they'll get the precinct to act.

And GO TO THE 68th PRECINCT COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETINGS!

You also might want to call your local city councilman, Vincent Gentile, (718) 748-5200.

A few years ago, we had problems with certain jerks constantly firing off illegal fireworks in the neighborhood. Even a visit to the 68th Precinct's monthly community meeting was useless in resolving this problem. A call to Vince Gentile's office netted results, however. The cops materialized shortly afterwards to confiscate the M80's, etc.

Seems odd that someone would post a random shot and say it's that house...but the picture appears to be a one story building and the house we're talking about is a two-story house, so it's definitely not the main house...but I wonder if that pic is a shed or something out in the back, don't know.

Do you have a block association? If so, I would contact them and try to a get a meeting going regarding it; and if not, see if there's any interest on the block in organizing one. Lots of times you need group force to get your point across -- should a group of 10-20 invade the next mtg at the 68 you would probably get some attention -- or how about letters to local papers.
  9.  permalink
    Trish,

I'm trying to get hold of some old contacts in local news, some of them are ex-cops, who might throw some light on the problem and SHAME our public officials into doing something.

I don't know who the new Precinct commander is, so I'm not going to comment on how seriously he takes the Comunity Coucil Meetings, but if he's anything like the guy that just left, we got our work cut out for us.
  10.  permalink
Yeah, it sucks -- unfortunately, once the official ball gets rolling its still going to take time. But in my experience its takes perserverance and big mouths to get their attention. Must have gone to about 5 in a row of them a while back when we had problems on the block (not even drugs) and that was one of the the main reasons why they organized the block association. There's even a block association coalition that will help you get organized and stuff.

I used to walk past this house all the time on the way to the subway. It is bad enough the Prince Hotel is on that block, now this place! The people there in my opinion are not on crack, but heroin and methodone. They are so white trash, and always fighting. I have since moved to another drug infested building in Bay Ridge.

When I was a kid, there was a block that friends lived on (63rd street) that had a drug dealer living on it-and dealing out of the house. All of the neighbors got together one Saturday with signs(Drug dealers get out!) and a bullhorn yelling the guys name and the fact that drugs were being dealt, shamed his customers who were attempting to go up his stoop. From what I remember the guy moved out not too long after.

The story with the house is that the parents owned like two building and when they died the kids sold them the next day all cash and kep the houses on the middle of the block. Guess they have been sending their money on crack ever since.

Just sit and watch teh hotel in the afternoon when the hooker get dropped off by drivers and you will see. Also in response to em he is how it went down

Valet had sign in street and cop came up to give ticket. Valet kid ripped up the ticken ( which he had the right to do) Next thing you know there are like ten cops on teh scene. And if you looked down the block on teh side of kettle black you could see them beating the crap out of this poor kid.

People tried to approach the officers and they said that he assulted one of the cops which is BS cause no one in tehior right mnd start a fist fight with a guy carrying a glock. I would love to see if anyone has video or camera phone pictures of the event

When calling 911, I wouldn't go embellishing too much about the situation. Depending on how those calls are relayed to the cops in the field, it could be dangerous for them to go into something where they think one thing and something completely different is going on. For instance, if you say that someone has a weapon, it may mean that 3 or 4 cars will all head over there with their lights and sirens going, which just increases the odds that they will be involved in an accident on the way. Think it doesn't happen? It does.

I've replied to a few discussions already about drug sales in Bay Ridge. But generally, this is what I'd do (and I might, this is a few blocks from my girlfriends apartment).

Call the 68th Precinct and ask to speak with someone in Community Affairs. Express your concerns to them and ask who you need to speak to in order to get this problem solved. This will most likely lead to a message for the Special Projects supervisor. But, in addition to that, ask if there are any cops who are particularly active who may take an interest in this; the anti-crime team or even some bright, active patrol officers. Leave them your name and phone number because they may want to call you and ask for details; times people are showing up or how the deals are being made (from cars or walking). You aren't going to have to point anyone out in court, because the police are able to observe everything on their own, so I really wouldnt be worried about your cooperation getting you into any trouble with the dealers.

If you dont seem to be getting any attention after a week or two I'd start going to the Community Council meetings or scheduling an appointment to speak with the Community Affairs supervisor in the precinct. You'd be surprised how much cooperation you'd get when they are able to put a face with the complaint.

Keep calling 911 whenever you hear fighting or even to report drug sales. Give descriptions of people as accurately as possible and, if possible state where they are keeping the drugs. For instance, if you see them buy something and put it in their right pocket, tell the operator that. The more specifics you are able to tell them, the more credence your call has.

You can always leave a message for them by calling the main number, (718) 439-4211. I've called their office recently about some kids vandalizing some nearby buildings, say 3 weeks ago, and got an answer. I did leave a couple of messages for them, which weren't returned; but I dont know if that is their fault or whether the message even got to them.

Remember, you really only need the Community Affairs to pass along the information to whichever unit is going to handle the situation. It'll be based mainly on what times things are going on. Don't be afraid to ask for the name of the Sgt or Lt that supervises that team; and an office phone number if they have one. A good contact there will outweigh CA.

I can make a few phone calls, but since I personally don't know anything about the situation, and have never witnessed anything myself, the most I can do is pass along some information - which, to be honest, may not do much good.

You're right though, I am a cop. And sometimes when I'm the officer dealing with this type of situation, I'll get people who come up to me and say, "You know, I call up all the time on this place". And, sometimes, I sit there confused, shaking my head, because it'll be the first time I've ever heard of it. I can see how it may be frustrating for the public, to make complaints that seemingly fall on deaf ears.

I know this thread is about drugs being sold at this house but, as many have stated on this board, what drew attention to this house in the first place was all the screaming and yelling. So an article in the bay ridge courier caught my attention - the article was about dyker heights residents who are frustrated by nighttime noise coming from a nearby home, and it was brought up at an october community board 10 meeting. One of the statements made by the crowd: "There’s a loophole in enforcement, between the law and who comes and when they come. 911 sends you to 311. 311 recommends exaggerating it, but when the cops find out it’s a noise scenario, it’s de-prioritized." Josephine Beckmann, CB 10’s district manager, said in a subsequent interview that the board is beginning fact-finding to determine what can be done to ease residential noise situations, and will be holding a committee meeting later this month on the issue. "It’s a tough one," she acknowledged. "Enforcement becomes a low priority with the Police Department. They go, see it’s a family, and leave."

Obviously this situation is very different from the dyker heights complaints in that we're talking about a drug house, but it's similar in that the only time people are calling 911 or 311 is when there's a loud disturbance. You can't call 311 and just report a drug house - they tell you call back when something is in progress. Well unless you're staking out the house, LOL, the only time you'll know anything is in progress is when there's a loud fight. And just because they're fighting doesn't mean any drug sales are taking place at the time; so even if the cops show up, it will probably be a similar scenario as Beckmann stated: "They go, see it's a family, and leave." So how do you go about getting someone to look into the drug sales going on at this house? cause it seems that using the noise disturbance as a start will get you nowhere.

p.s.: Has anyone gotten through to Community Affairs (as Jabs recommended)? I tried calling and no one ever answered.

I've been extremely busy at work lately. But I did forward information to some officers in the 68 pct as well as Brooklyn South Narcotics.

In my opinion, 311 is great if you have a streetlight out or need some other city services. Other than that, I'd be using 911 when I see suspicious people mulling around in front of their/your house (if it looks like they are there to buy or use drugs), or whenever there is a loud argument or fight outside.

I may have posted this before, maybe in another thread, but you will probably get more assistance by going to the 68 pct stationhouse and asking to talk to someone about it. If you get the feeling that you are going nowhere with the officer at reception (if it is an officer), ask to speak to the sergeant or lieutenant. Ask if there are any units or cops in the precinct that you could speak with. Get the name of whatever sergeant is in charge of the unit and ask if you can make an appointment to see them.

I'd suggest 5:00 - 5:30pm. In my precinct that is when the Conditions team begins their late tour. The Conditions team, by assignment deals with quality of life offenses, which is what we are talking about here. At least in my precinct; YMMV.

Like I've said, I've made some calls, we'll see how far that goes. But I really suggest that you visit the precinct if you feel like your complaints are falling on deaf ears.

    Jabs,

Thanks for your interest and assistance. Please keep us posted if you hear anything.

I will say this from personal experience; going to the precinct is an exercise in futility.

The officers at the 68 do not come across as professional, articulate or as helpful as yourself.

Having been to the 68 on a number of occasions you are not greeted by any officer, they literally sit there like statues, staring at the ceiling, while other officers talk amongst themselves and try to deny your very existence.

Finally, when you they have no choice but to recognize your presence they are visibly annoyed.

This is not an isolated incident either, it is typical of the demeanor of those in the station.

Thanks again for your interest and help Jabs. It is much appreciated.

I hope I'm not getting ahead of myself, but I really think this precinct has stepped up its game.

I'm happy to see a more diverse range of cops in our neighborhood, asian, African American, Latino female officers - I think it goes a long way to breaking up the Bensonhurts/Dyker Heights goomba boys club mentality.

There's a noticeable increase in presence and community policing which was lacking under the previous commander; i.e. around our parks, playground etc... too many of which had become hangouts for troublemakers.

Hey, just as an FYI (and particularly for Jabs)...

There have been two deaths in a one block radius up here. One was definitely an overdose and the other is suspect, but the toxicology is still pending (to my knowledge).

If the tox comes back positive, then that could indicate that some bad stuff has hit the streets. One OD, I could chalk it up to coincidence...two within two weeks, less of a coincidence...
