MQS, it's in DUMBO. Wonderful chocolate shop, owned by one of the world's greatest chocolatiers. The hot chocolate is pretty much melted chocolate and milk, or at least tastes like it. You can get it in regular or wicked- the wicked has spices and chili powder in it, and it's incredible! And in the warm months, he does frozen hot chocolate, also available in Wicked. It is a little bit of heaven, right here on earth.

    OK, hold on, now....

Why don't you'se take your 'chocolate talk' into another thread now....

See, I don't normally get all crazy about "off topic" stuff, but this thread is CLEARLY labelled 'BBQ' and 'Woodburning'....etc, etc, so forth and so on.....

Worry not, I'd happily contribute to a fondue thread and yummy chocolate things, but here isn't all that 'thread appropriate'....move along, move along...

Ordered last night- food was un-freaking-believable. And there was enough for dinner for two nights. I'll probably be ordering from there once a week.

Though traditional mole isn't barbecue, you CAN use the basic flavors in the application (we carry a mole dryglaze for just such a purpose and it's phenomenal). I've normally had it as a sauce that can be poured over barbecued meat, and made right, it doesn't taste like chocolate at all.

J Torres is overrated. I used to work for him, and there are FAR better chocolate shops in NYC. And I bet they pay better than minimum wage. That man's markups are ridiculous.

I will take on any of you BBQ'ers. Just added an indoor stovetop smoker to my smoker collection.

And red meat isn't the only great thing to smoke- love to smoke seafood and going to try smoking cheese this weekend.

BTW- the place that Hill Country was inspired by is in Lockhart Texas, not Austin. Every year by DH and I make a Lockhart pilgrimage- we hit at least 3 BBQ joints in one day and eat our way through town.

    observations

    1) went to the Bald Man chocolate place on Union Square. Its simply too, too crowded. Extremely long wait time. And chocolate is not even their main food! Its a regular restaurant with a side menu of chocolate which mostly comes out of the espresso/cafe side of the kitchen. Or, at least thats what it seemed like to me.

    2) Churascurria in Tribeca--there's actually three or four brazilian places in Tribeca; two of them right next to each other. But you can't. . i don't know. . really get down and dirty there with your meat.

    3) That picture though. . damn look at that capheirhenia on the table. . slurp. . forget the lame side dishes but keep the drink

    4) Indeed, welcome all new BRT'ers who are BBQ equipped! Sounds like a serious cadre of BBQ talent, previously unknown of, at the south end of Bay Ridge!

I think there should be a mega BBQ between you all, this summer . . to make up for the one that GCI BLEW OFF last year

    5) Who can like BBQ but not like pork BBQ??

    6) Kinda agree, keep chocolate off the grill. Just no good. Let a mexican deli make you a mole if you need it.

    That's all.

Went to this place last night. My husband and cousin loved it. We started out going to Buttermilk Channel on Court Street but they were so crowded and couldn't seat us for 1 hour so we headed out in that area looking for another restaurant to go to. Every place we tried was mobbed. Came back to BR and went to the Pit. I met a couple I know from a long time ago in there and they had just finished eating and said they like the food. They also said they went to many places on Smith Street after Ikea to go to dinner and every place was crowded. Driving home on 3rd Avenue I saw that just about every restaurant I looked in on in Bay Ridge, except Tanoreen, was empty. That is sad.

Trish, I've had one of the hot chocolates in that place off Union Sq., "Chocolate by the Bald Man" I think it's called. Fantastic! Today I had one at the Chocolate Shop, next to the Cobble Hill Cinema and it was just as lovely. Prices are about the same - $4.50 for a not-too-large cup. I wish they'd open a branch here in BR.

edit to say: we went after going to the alpine to see mall cop (very cute!!). that place is a total dump.

Dump is correct, bacci. I was there earlier this week and the quality of the picture on the screen was pitiful; it was as if there was a scrim across and was blurry. The sound was blurry, too.

so I'll take that as a "yes" it is the same place then. :)
I didn't search through old threads so I couldn't remember who mentioned it, just recalled someone saying it was better as take-out than sit-down -- so would those others of you that have been there agree or disagree? I'm curious because based on the type of place it is (portuguese bbq), I would expect it to be fun to eat there...or is it that the place is small/cramped?

<blockquote><cite>Posted By: citygirl</cite>About the markup of Jacques Torres. Isn't he putting ingredients together to make a unique product? To me a ridiculous markup is charging $10 for a $2 bottle of sherry wine vinegar.</blockquote>

Sometimes you're paying for product, sometimes you're paying for name, and sometimes you're paying for both. We wanted to bring in his brownie mixes for the shop (which are produced by King Arthur Flour using his recipe and image), and the wholesale cost was close to $15. I'm sure if we were a big volume retailer like Whole Foods or Fairway we could probably get it for closer to $10, but to make cover my costs plus rent, insurance, payroll and the million other things I have to pay for each month, I'd have to charge $20, which is unreasonable, considering that most of the wholesale cost is licensing.

I guess it's also really easy to be bitter when you work in a factory for minimum wage, are given 15 minutes to eat, no overtime, constantly being screamed at (watch Hell's Kitchen and you'll understand what happens in high end kitchens), and you see your boss pull up once in a blue moon in a fancy imported sports car wearing clothes that cost a month's salary. But it's a very French Chef philosophy- you don't work for them for wages, you work there for the honor of working under such an esteemed chef. I just wish honor could pay the bills.

As for sherry wine vinegar- it can run from $2 to $200, probably more, though I've yet to see it. It's just like any wine shop- there's a big difference between cooking wine and a premium vintage bordeaux. If you're using a tablespoon of it in a marinade or a soup, you should use the cheaper stuff. But if you're using it in a dressing, or eating it straight as a cheese accompaniment, you should go with a higher quality one.

If anyone has a few extra bucks to splurge on chocolate, my personal favorite is Vosges Haut-Chocolate (they have two shops in the city, but you can get them online: http://www.vosgeschocolate.com/). The philosophy is travelling the world through chocolate, and it is a completely unbelievable sensory experience. Plus, they make my favorite chocolate item of all time: Mo's Bacon Bar- Deep Milk Chocolate, Applewood Smoked Bacon, & Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt. They just added a chocolate bacon pig, but I haven't tried it yet.
